And do you not re member when I broke the five loaves among five thousand? How many baskets full of leftovers did you collect?”
They answered, “Twelve.”
“And having distributed seven loaves to the four thousand, how many wicker baskets of leftovers did you collect?” They answered, “Seven.”
Then Jesus said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
REFLECTION:
The disciples were struggling to follow Jesus. Wavering in their faith,
they could not lift up their eyes or go deeper and thus remained anchored upon their own perspectives. Of course, they followed the Lord;
they were fascinated by him as they listened to him and saw the miracles he did. But their minds were still small,
tight in the grip of their worldview. So, Jesus admonished them and invited them not to be taken by the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod.
This Herod, one of the sons of Herod the Great, and the Pharisees used religion for their own political and personal ends.
Unfortunately, even today, many people think of faith only within their personal, cultural and social dimensions. Reasoning in human terms,
we think of our own benefits by putting faith into them. In one way or another,
we are all guilty of this when we think of God as something or someone that brings us an advantage.
This is not the faith that Jesus proposes. This is not the face of the God who came to announce the coming of the Kingdom.
