is the smallest of all the seeds scattered upon the soil. But once sown, it grows up and becomes the largest of the plants in
the garden; and even grows branches so big, that the birds of the air can take shelter in its shade.”
Jesus used many such stories, in order to proclaim the word to them in a way that they would be able to understand. He would
not teach them without parables; but privately, to his disciples, he explained everything.
REFLECTION:
As a classroom teacher, I always use pictures as visual aids to help students understand the lesson. Jesus is an itinerant preacher;
his classroom is the world around him and his listeners. He uses nature and daily life experiences as his visual aids to lead his
listeners understand the richness of the kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is a mysterious reality, which is not easy to
comprehend so Jesus uses common things as a comparison. The farmer sows the seeds, which grow slowly. The farmer cultivates them
but the full growth of the seeds is beyond the farmer’s ability. We need to cultivate our faith though prayer, study,
and guidance of Mother Church. We need the Holy Spirit to guide and help us love, live, and share the richness of our Catholic faith.
