DG BookGospel: Jn 15:12–17
This is my commandment: Love one another as I have loved you! There is no greater love than this, to give one’s life for
one’s friends; and you are my friends, if you do what I command you. I shall not call you servants any more,
because servants do not know what their master is about. Instead, I have called you friends, since I have made known to you

everything I learned from my Father. You did not choose me; it was I who chose you and sent you to go and bear fruit, fruit
that will last. And everything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. This is my command, that you love one another.

Reflection:

Love is now the topic being developed by the Lord. He identified love
in yesterday’s gospel as the motor of obedience. Now He further expands the
notion of love with selfsacrifice. If one can give oneself for others without
regard to oneself, then one has reached the height of love. The point of reference
here is Jesus Christ. He did not hesitate to give His life for His friends. This is the
reason why He commands His disciples to love one another just as He loves
them. It is a very tall order. The disciples will have to spend a lifetime until
they have the courage to emulate their Lord and Master.
