You feel sorrowful now, but I will see you again, and yourhearts will rejoice; and no one will take
your joy from you. When that day comes you will not ask me anything. Truly, Isay to you, whatever
you ask the Father in my name, he willgive you.
Reflection
My Roots and My Destiny is aMy Roots and My Destiny is abook that contains the diarywritings of
a little orphan Indiangirl who was adopted by aBelgian family. As an adult, JulieHendrix returns to
India twice,in search of her mother and herroots. The searing pain of thesearch she captures in this
linepoignantly: “I am giving birth tomy mother.”
Aren’t we all called to bemothers, giving birth to God? We are like the woman inchildbirth who “is in
distressbecause her time is at hand”—to give birth to God in the world. As in any childbirth, it
involvessearing pain, sorrow, and tears.Yet, a mother looks forward tothis moment, embraces
this moment of sorrow as a momentof grace; because, this sorrow isnot a negative one, but a lifegiving,
creative one. It is a sorrowthat would soon be transformedinto joy. It is the very birthing ofjoy itself.
And this is our vocationon earth.
