Jesus answered them, “You say that youJesus answered them, “You say that youbelieve?
The hour is coming, indeed it hascome, when you will be scattered, eachone to his home,
and you will leave mealone. Yet I am not alone, for the Fatheris with me.
I have told you all this, so that inme you may have peace. You will havetrouble in the world;
but, courage! Ihave overcome the world.”
Reflection
In response to the declarationIn response to the declarationof faith by the disciples, Jesus tells
them bluntly that they willall desert him at some point, andthat’s alright and he can take it,for the
Father is with him. Healso warns them that they willhave much trouble in the world,but must take
heart in that hehas overcome the world and heis on their side. See the matterof-fact-ness with which
Jesus speaks of such difficult events!Only someone who has thehighest sense of security andsupreme
confidence in the planof God can do so! Such persondoes not have to live in denialof reality or in a
make-believeworld. He can face life with allits challenges, betrayals, anddetours—for he knows that
Godwill have the last laugh. It is nowonder that it is this plain talkthat makes the disciples believe
that he must truly be from God.
