You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets are founded on these two commandments.”
REFLECTION:
There is a difference between how to follow the law and what makes us follow the law.
Legal experts are more interested in how we follow rules and commandments.
When there is conflict in following these commandments,
lawyers add more laws to give clearer directions how to follow them.
These added rules, however, can drift us farther from the ground why there are rules in the first place.
Jesus wants us to focus on what makes us follow the law.
We first deepen our relationship with God, which entails deepening our relationship with our brothers and sisters.
Only in that deep relationship we come to know the root and heart of these commandments.
The greatest commandment then is not really a commandment. It is a relationship which commands us to follow these laws.
Accordingly, the same relationship enables us to check the limits of such commandments.
