and remain in his love. I have told you all this, that my own joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete.
Reflection:
Obedience is given freely and generously if it is powered by love. That
is why Jesus’ obedience to the Father is perfect. It is not one of power struggle and
domination but loving the person who commands. Why love the commander?
It is because the command is not for the detriment of the follower and the benefit
of the commander. It is for the good of all. That is why Jesus asks His disciples to
demonstrate their love by following His commands to them. They are now part
of something bigger than themselves. Jesus inserts them into His own loving
obedience to the Father. If they, His disciples follow His command, they follow the
command of the Father.
