DG BookGospel: Jn 19:25-27 (or Lk 2:33-35)
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister Mary, who was
the wife of Cleophas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw the Mother, and the

disciple whom he loved, he said to the Mother, “Woman, this is your son.” Then he
said to the disciple, “There is your mother.” And from that moment the disciple took her
to his own home.

Reflection:

Among those who stood with Jesus till
the end are the women. The three Mary’s who did not
hide but proclaimed their allegiance to the Lord till
the end. There is something noble about the courage of
these women. It is based on something powerful that
they can throw caution to the wind. They are sustained by
their deep love for the Lord. There is no hint of defiance
in their stance. They do not seek confrontation with
the powers that be that condemned Jesus. They are
there solely for the reason that they love the Lord
passionately. And with them is John, the beloved disciple.
He alone among the apostles dares to show himself in
plain sight of enemies as he accompanies his beloved
Master till the end. That is why the Lord entrusted His
most precious here on earth to John. His mother is in good
hands because John showed the strength of his love at the
foot of the cross.
