away, but I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I go to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I.
I have told you this now before it takes place, so that when it does happen you may
believe. There is very little left for me to tell you, for the prince of this world is at
hand, although there is nothing in me that he can claim. But see, the world must
know that I love the Father, and that I do what the Father has taught me to do.
Come now, let us go.
Reflect
Peace is in short supply in our world. The news is filled with stories of military actions and
insurrections as nations and resistance groups pursue their own interests. Our communities
are torn apart by factions fighting with each other. Criminal gangs bring violence, sometimes
even to neighborhood streets. Unfortunately, not even our families are immune from this
lack of peace.
The Gospel tells us that Jesus came to bring peace. But the peace he brings is not the
peace of a carefully constructed diplomatic agreement or a negotiated ceasefire. It is
not the peace of polite formality that exists in some families. Instead, the peace that
Jesus brings is founded on his example of self-giving love. By following Jesus’
example, we will have no fear. We can pursue truth and live without regard to our
own interests. If we love as Jesus loved, peace will reign in our hearts and in
our world.
