Fortunate are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Fortunate are those who mourn; they shall be comforted.
Fortunate are the gentle; they shall possess the land.
Fortunate are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.
Fortunate are the merciful, for they shall find mercy.
Fortunate are those with pure hearts, for they shall see God.
Fortunate are those who work for peace; they shall be called children of God.
Fortunate are those who are persecuted for the cause of righteousness, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Fortunate are you, when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil
against you because you are my followers.
Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you in God. For that is how this people
persecuted the prophets who lived before you.
Reflect
Life is difficult. Our days are filled with so many challenges: financial problems, family
disagreements, job loss, illness, depression, anxiety. But the first reading today
reminds us that God is with us through it all, offering comfort and encouragement.
Now, it’s important to note that our faith in Christ Jesus does not mean that
we will be shielded from the trials of life. Nor does it mean that those who face such
trials are being punished by God. Instead, when we accept the challenges and difficulties
that we face with perseverance, we are sharing in Christ’s suffering in our own small way,
accepting the daily crosses that come to each disciple. By uniting our suffering to Christ’s,
we join our efforts to his as an offering to the Father. The Father will receive our offering
and give us the comfort, strength, and hope we need to go on. Even in our difficulties,
we are truly fortunate, for our reward in heaven will be great.
