trample on it. You are the light of the world.
A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and covers it; instead it is
put on a lamp stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way your light
must shine before others, so that they may see the good you do and praise your Father in
heaven.
Reflect
I have always been afraid of the dark. As a child, I had to leave a light burning at night. Even
as an adult, I want to be safe inside my home when night falls. In the darkness, I find it difficult
to move about. I get nervous and stumble instead of walking quickly and confidently as I do
during the day. I always breathe a sigh of relief when a streetlight comes on.
When we give witness to our faith, we become lights that help others to find their way.
Our witness may be in words of comfort or encouragement, in instruction or admonition, or
simply in our silent presence. We may give witness to God’s glory through our actions, feeding
the hungry, visiting the sick, imprisoned, or lonely, and giving from what we have so that others
will have enough. We can also give witness by using our voices on behalf of the poor and
vulnerable, those on the margins. We can speak out about unjust systems and advocate for
all to have what they need to live in dignity.
