but once it is fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and
rest in its branches.”
He told them another parable, “The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast that a woman took,
and hid in three measures of flour, until the whole mass of dough began to rise.”
Jesus taught all these things to the crowds by means of parables; he did not say anything
to them without using a parable. This fulfilled what was spoken by the Prophet: I will speak
in parables. I will proclaim things kept secret since the beginning of the world.
Reflect
Yeast and a mustard seed are interesting images for the kingdom of heaven. A little bit
of yeast can transform simple ingredients – flour, water, and salt – into hearty, delicious bread,
or transform hops, malt, and water into beer. A small amount can transform a large amount of
matter, pervading every bit of it. Mustard seeds do something similar. If you’ve ever spilled a
jar of mustard seeds, you know that they get everywhere! You’ll never be able to sweep them
all up. But planted in the earth, a tiny seed becomes a large plant.
That’s how God’s grace works in our life. If we let God into our hearts, even just a little bit, his
grace will fill every corner of our lives. Even the parts we’d like to keep hidden. God’s grace,
mercy, and love will overflow, transforming our often messy lives into something beautiful,
good, and holy.
