Jesus answered them, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the
world; the good seed are the people of the kingdom; the weeds are those who follow the evil
one. The enemy who sows the weeds is the devil; the harvest is the end of time, and the
workers are the angels. Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will
it be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will weed out of
his kingdom all that is scandalous and all who do evil. And these will be thrown into the blazing
furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the just will shine, like the
sun, in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear.
Reflect
Moses had such a close relationship with God. Moses spent a great deal of time in the
Tent of Meeting, conversing with God, learning his will, and interceding with the Lord
on behalf of the people. Scripture even tells us that Moses spoke with God like a friend
or neighbor. We may think that Moses was especially fortunate or blessed – and indeed
he was – but that same close relationship with God is available to us, in Jesus. In Jesus,
God became human, like us in all things but sin. Therefore, he shares our human
experiences, our hopes and fears, our joys and sorrows. We can talk to Jesus
like a friend, knowing that he will understand us. But we are not talking to a distant God
in some far-off heaven. Indeed. Christ remains present with us even today, in his Church
and in his sacraments, most especially in the Eucharist. We can draw near to him in love
each day, sharing our lives, seeking his help, and talking with him like a friend.
