changed before them: his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as snow.
Then suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. Peter spoke up and
said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will make three tents: one for
you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Peter was still speaking, when a bright cloud covered
them with its shadow; and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, my
Chosen One. Listen to him.” On hearing the voice, the disciples fell to the ground, full of fear.
But Jesus came, touched them, and said, “Stand up, do not be afraid!” When they raised their
eyes, they no longer saw anyone except Jesus. And as they came down the mountain, Jesus
commanded them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man be raised from
the dead.
READ: Daniel recounts a vision of the end days as the Son of Man takes
his place as eternal king with dominion over all peoples. The Second Letter
of Saint Peter offers evidence for faith in Christ because of the apostles’
witness to what Jesus did while he was among them. The Gospel recounts
Jesus’ Transfiguration when Peter, James, and John witnessed Jesus in
his glorified body talking with Moses and Elijah.
REFLECT: On August 6, 1945, our world was transformed when the
first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The
moment has had a long-lasting effect on our world, making it seem more
fragile and its safety more tenuous. Jesus’ Transfiguration is an antidote
to the disfiguring that humans do to the world because of our sinfulness.
If we listen to Jesus, God’s Chosen One, and discern God’s will for us. We
can remove that sin from our lives. We can help to replace destruction
with the kingdom God wishes us to create. We can learn to appreciate
and value the people and the world that God has made, treating them
with love and care.
PRAY: Lord, help me to live in awe of your glory.
