My daughter is tormented by a demon.”
But Jesus did not answer her, not even a word. So his disciples approached him and said,
“Send her away! See how she is shouting after us.” Then Jesus said to her, “I was sent
only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel.” But the woman was already kneeling before
Jesus, and said, “Sir, help me!” Jesus answered, “It is not right to take the bread from the
children and throw it to puppies.” The woman replied, “That is true, sir, but even puppies
eat the crumbs which fall from their master’s table.” Then Jesus said, “Woman, how great
is your faith! Let it be as you wish.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
READ: Through Isaiah, God calls all nations to worship in his holy temple where he will
receive their prayers and sacrifices. In his letter to the Romans, Paul reaches out to both
Jews and Gentiles, preaching the Gospel to all willing to hear. In the Gospel, a Canaanite
woman approaches Jesus to request healing for her daughter. In response to her trust and
persistence, Jesus extends his ministry beyond Israel and restores her daughter to health.
REFLECT: James Joyce described the Catholic Church as “Here comes everyone.” He
might have been inspired by today’s readings. The Church is a welcoming mother, ready
to receive anyone who wishes to come to God, without regard to age, class, race, or
ethnicity. There is room for everyone in God’s house of prayer. As members of his Church,
we extend God’s hospitality and welcome to those searching for a place where they feel
like they belong. Jesus calls each of us to reach out to those on the margins, bringing
them to the center, to the very heart of God.
PRAY: Lord, help me to make others welcome in your house of prayer.
ACT: Invite someone to come to church with you.
