The Filipino youth, amidst today's social turmoil and apparent lack
of meaning in existence, are constantly in search of models of
spiritual purposefulness, grounded in a dedicated love for the
divine, and in humble service to those who are in need or are being
left behind.
This new book for children and young adults hopes to introduce
one such model: Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, CMF, a Claretian missionary
priest who along with eight other hostages, died at the hands of
armed terrorists in Basilan on May 3, 2000. It is being promoted
as part of the celebration of the twenty-fifth
anniversary of his martyrdom.
With particular reference to Psalm 1, we are called like
Fr. Rhoel, to a life of holiness. We are called to "be like trees".
A tree is an excellent metaphor for the exemplary living of the
Christian life, characterized by a humble and silent, yet steadfast
and joyful witnessing of the Creator's love; and by a generous
giving of its fruits, and of itself, for the comfort and
upliftment of others.
May the next generation, by God's grace,
become "trees" for the Church of the future!
